I know I've been on a Twitter-kick lately when it comes to postings, but I've been doing a number of projects with a couple of Twitter accounts and I just keep noticing things that I think folks might want to know
The more I work with Twitter, the more I get frustrated by the clumsy interfaces and apps involved with this tool. A tool that has practical advantages and great potential ahead. So I've decided to make a "wish list" of items that I wish some company or someone would come up with.
Here's some things I'd like to see:
1) A screen on the Twitter web interface that would allow me to see the following information about every follower/following:
- # of Following / # of Followers -- so I can see those folks who are following/followers of bazillions of people
- Their brief description -- are they relevant to me?
- An indication (percentages?) that shows how many messages they put out vs. @ messages -- the better to see which ones are just talking *at* people and not *with* people
2) Sometimes you want to use a Twitter account to engage in targeted conversation. If that's the case, you don't want to automatically follow back anyone who follows you. You want to be aware of who they are and why they may be following your Twitterstream. The ability to program in specific keywords that would then alert me if they are used in the username, name, description of those who decide to follow me or my cients. For example, I'm thinking of words like:
- money / success / wealth
- bot
- gossip / rumor
- resort / cruise
- seo
The terms above, for example, would have nothing to do with my fields of interests and would alert me to the fact that I do not want to follow these folks back.
Why are some of these things important? I believe that people look at your followers to get a sense of your legitimacy by seeing who is listening to you and actively interacting with you. If you're following a lot of people who don't seem to be related to the focus of your work, your blog, your Twitterstream, you may unwittingly be communicating a lack of focus.
For people who are in broad industries, perhaps it doesn't matter as much -- but in the ones that I work with, it does.
3) I want a way for me to be able to determine my choice of URL shortener and enter my own API right from the web page or application so that it doesn't take multiple steps to get my tracked, shortened version into a twitter.
That's enough for today. I'm practically twittered out already... (not really!)
