How not to: Market your consulting services

by Ruth Sylte · 4 comments

Stupid ClientsI recently came across the following status message (which might have been on Facebook or Twitter or some other social network -- I'm not telling!)

My new venture: online courses. #WordPress for Noobs (newbies) begins Jan 10. Get it thru #YourThickSkull

Are you serious?? Do you really think that calling your potential clients "noobs" or "newbies" and then tagging them with "#YourThickSkull" is  going to encourage them to:

  1. Take your course?
  2. Hire you as a consultant?

I think not. If you're going to market your services to clients, my advice is:

"Don't make potential clients think that you think that your potential clients are idiots or  stupid..."

Unfortunately, this type of marketing only makes YOU look like an idiot. Just sayin'..

great. I really like what you\'ve acquired here, really like what you are stating and the way in which you say it. You make it enjoyable and you still take care of to keep it sensible. I can\'t wait to read much more from you. This is really a tremendous site.

It definitly is and I can see how to really put it to good use, however, the rate at which people singed up with it was new would have lead me to think it would be much more popular and talked about amongst non-tech people by now. I think after people realised it didnt have a direct result on the serp pages they lost a little interest.
