How not to: Use an iPod 01

iPodsThis evening I went to a local eatery. It was very quiet and few patrons were around -- which, of course, made for a great evening of conversation with a friend.

But the problem was one of the waitrons -- who had decided to play a personal playlist from his personal iPod on the establishment's sound system.

Now, I'm all for playing music in restaurants and other eating establishement. And I'm all for  the appropriate use of iPods. But this wasn't it.

If you are using your personal iPod to play your personal playlist(s) in a public space -- you might be committing a social faux pas and damaging your employer. Why? What you listen to personally may not be appropriate to the audience of your establishment.

Music can be important for a business establishment, especially restaurants. You need to be aware of what you are playing. In this case, the venue was really a place where jazz and 1960s and 1970s soft rock would work very well.  But the waitron was playing current alternative music -- and it was really turning patrons off. To the point where the few patrons who were there were leaving!

Be careful how you use technology. It could make (or break!) your business -- 0r your employer's! And if you break your employer's business, you are out of a job.
