Tech Tip: Google Browser Sync for Firefox

by Ruth Sylte · 1 comment

It's "Tech Tuesday!" as I have started to call it.?Today's tool is called Google Browser Sync for Firefox. It is an easily downloadable Firefox extension -- a bit of API software code that allows people using the Firefox browser (my personal favorite) to sync their?browser settings, including bookmarks, history, persistent cookies, and saved passwords, between multiple computers.

Because of the information that is shared between computers, I suggest that it is best used between computers used for similar purposes. That is, between a work desktop and laptop or home desktop and laptop, for example. You want to be careful not to have personal bookmarks and account passwords on a machine that you don't own, such as a work computer.

I also suggest setting up Google Browser Sync first on your "dominant" computer -- the one with your most accurate bookmarks, etc. Once Google Browser Sync is installed and synced with the network, then install it on the non-dominant computers and let it sync up. You will, at first, find duplicate entries. However, once you clean up your bookmarks, it really takes off.

Google Browser Synce became a "lifesaver" for me shortly after I had installed it on my Mac desktop and Mac laptop. About one week after getting it working smoothly, my laptop hard disk completely crashed and had to be replaced.

Because it automatically saves bookmarks and other information as I use it, I was able to start using a third computer (Win OS) to which I had secure access by installing Google Browser Sync (which took less than a minute) and immediately all my bookmarks and information were in place -- and it also brought up all the web pages that I had open in Firefox at the moment my laptop crashed!! Brilliant!! Saved me hours of work!!

I've now installed it on a fourth computer to which I have secure access, so I hope to worry far less about losing crucial bookmarks and information when I need them.?

Cost: US$0 - That's right, it's FREE!

I’ve been using this tool for awhile and it’s really great to be able to move from computer with browsing history and such coming along with me. It is a real energy saver.
