Well, as a Swede, you *are* a Viking. After all, it was the Swedish Vikings that traded with the East, named "Russia" (which is from "Rus",the Swedish word for "Red" (as in Eirik the...), and may have bashed a few Celts themselves...

Why does it sound like she's taking great gleeful pride in this?

Hey! I'm tired of the Vikings getting such a bad rap. All these tiresome histories claiming that Vikings raided this, pillaged that. And who wrote these tomes? The "victims." Talk about mediaeval political correctness - victimization was obviously rampant even in those early times.

There were benefits to being a Viking, you know. Living in cold climates helps to keep the riff-raff out. And folks from cold climates like to travel to warmer ones. What's wrong with that?

The Vikings were well-known as traders and had quite a nice civilization, thank you. And they were obviously interested in other cultures. Is it our fault that a few monks got underfoot and were most likely mistakenly bashed over the head as they got in the way of the team of antiquities experts from the Coastal Museum of Other Countries' Good Stuff while acquiring extensive authentic articles for display? They cared about the education of future generations and were far-thinking enough to design places where little Viking tikes could enjoy educational mini-field trips with mor og far (mom and dad). The major field trips, of course, would come in adulthood.

I don't suppose any of those priests and prelates even bothered to invite "the guys" in for a nice cup of coffee, some cake and interesting, civilized cross-cultural conversation. Lousy hospitality, if you ask me. No wonder we burned London Bridge...

Think how much nicer the world would be today had these "victims" not been so xenophobic. Bløtkake (cream cake with fruit)) for dessert on a regular basis, decent American coffee, excellent public transportation, health care for everyone, etc. Mike (Jittlov), if you ever make that Viking movie, please give it a more realistic perspective. ;-)

Why do I have a mental picture of Ruth M. Sylte dressed like Red Sonja, carrying a huge mace, swaggering through burning ruins of recently-pillaged villages?

Lack of imagination...

I think it's genetic. Some of HER ancestors must have stomped some of MY ancestors!

Obviously not firmly enough...
