How I use Twitter

[I've updated this post a number of times since first publishing it to reflect some of the new tools and uses of Twitter.]

I've been using Twitter since early 2008. Here at Manitou Heights, I utilize Twitter to send notifications of the latest blog postings and other helpful and timely information.

If you're new to Twitter, social media analyst and guru Jeremiah Owyang wrote a helpful look at Twitter in December 2007 and has posted some updates.

To get a global view of the impact of Twitter technology, take a few moment to check out Twittervision and Twittearth.

Twitter can be read on the web or by using Twitter clients such as SnitterTwhirlTwitterfeed, TweetDeck and others. Besides being a communication tool, Twitter and some of the tools that utilize it allow you to:

  • Follow a discussion of an event or topic.
  • See how your Twitterverse is connected at TweetWheel, a visual representation of how you are connected to others on Twitter.?
  • TweetLater (SocialOomph)
  • Compare who you are following and who is following you on TwitterKarma
  • Figure out if your followers following ratio helps you beat Twittspam on TwerpScan
  • Anonymously tweet your innermost thoughts or confessions on SecretTweet.com

You can also receive and send Twitters using your mobile phone or smartphone, but we suggest that you have an unlimited SMS/text package or web access before activating Twitter for your phone -- as well as the time and energy to do so!

Before you get started Twittering, let us share some wise words from Shel Israel:

Advice to new tweeters. Post a few times before following others. That way we can see a bit about you before we go to your page.

To get started, I suggest first reading the Twitter Terms of Service. The, consider creating your Twitter account.

The Manitou Heights Twitterstream aims for a moderate amount of tweeting (except when we're traveling or blogging from an event, when all bets are off!) so that what we send out enhances your workday without being intrusive. Try out the Twitterstream by viewing it on the web or requesting to follow Manitou Heights at @rmsylte.
